The significant renovation, and extension of, a Grade II listed Regency Villa in Canterbury’s historic Dane John Gardens, set inside its city wall.
Themes currently being explored focus on architectural language and its manipulation; specifically the articulation of the formal and informal, architecture in conversation; how parameters are established to govern the new and whether new form should be of equal standing or subservient, or subordinate – and then whether layered or placed over the host.
Images left explore the Regency love for material subversion – stucco pretending to be stone, softwoods highly decorated as exotic hardwoods – and now, several cast steps and hearths appearing fabric-like. To be added matchboard timber will see wood grain made graphic.
In short, it’s about establishing an essence, much like its origin, but evolved for our times.
