>A036 Barons Court Road

Barons Court is the significant reframing of a purpose-built Victorian maisonette in west London. The project began as an exercise in surgical subtraction, which evolved into a dialogue of calibrated addition. Over time, this language matured, allowing a new ‘layer of character’ to emerge — a symbolic storytelling of its inhabitants, the area’s artistic lineage, and the hand of the maker.

The scheme inherits the client and site team from our Dartmouth Row project, showcasing how a cherished environment provides a tangible sense of refuge for its inhabitants — as if the craft itself becomes a grounding, protective material.

Patterned pargetting, textured surfaces, and a custom motif introduce a tangible artistry to the home, rooting it in its cultural context while feeling entirely of its time.

The project was ultimately guided not by singular and initial idea, but by an attritional, relentless care for the meaning found in making. This process results in what I have come to call a ‘thought patina’ — a quiet residue of the shared effort and friction between client, architect, and joiner. It is in this layering of intention, memory, and craft that the architecture becomes something not merely seen, but felt.

The project has recently been featured in The Modern House Journal and previously in a talk by the studio entitled ‘Retrofit and the Romantic’ shown first at UCA & The Canterbury School of Architecture.
