>Carl Trenfield

Drawing on a fine art based architectural education, Carl Trenfield’s approach is typically multidisciplinary and founded in both the physical and the wider ‘soft’ context that the work inhabits.

Following a significant period at Keith Williams Architects in London, working on and running revered key public buildings including theatres, libraries and galleries, Carl Trenfield established his atelier in 2012 with a view to creating thoughtful and thought-through architecture that offers delight to its end users, regardless of scale, budget or typology.

This approach is complimented by a solid practical experience and observation of making forged through close collaboration with joiners and master craftspeople over several years. More than words; much of the work is produced at our studio workshop, Unit Five, Canterbury – a way to faber-think.

Carl is a mentor at the Royal College of Art and has taught widely; previously at the University of Kent and Canterbury School of Architecture (2012 – 2014), and currently, at the Welsh School of Architecture, supporting Dr Steven Coombs on his post graduate Craft Unit; exploring making and its meaning, and further reinforcing the relationship between teaching and practice.

In 2016, and only four years since its inception, the studio was selected, amongst several other fine studios, for inclusion in The Architecture Foundation publication, New Architects 3 – its ‘definitive survey of the best British architects to have set up practice in the ten years since 2005′.

2021 will see further assembling with other leaders, incubating projects, with urgency, to address wider global issues, particularly that of climate change, to bring intense focus on the physical, initial and long term, impact of our work.
